Jailbreak Your iPod Touch

foo_0-vi.pngI know there are plenty of guides for Jailbreaking Your iPod Touch around, but I really had a lot of trouble doing this to my new iPod Touch, and found that most of these guides only provided half of what I needed to get the job done. That’s why I decided to write this guide which should easily get your iPod Touch Jailbroken!

First off, let’s try understand what Jailbreaking actually is. Just like the iPhone, the iPod Touch is not a writable device, meaning that users really don’t have much control over what they can do with the product. When you Jailbreak your iPod Touch or iPhone, it allows your iPod Touch (or iPhone) to be written to. It can get tricky, but thanks to the team at jailbreakme.com and touchdev.net, this can be done with a little bit of determination.

With the older iPod Touch firmware (1.1.1), it was easy enough to open up thanks to an exploit in how Safari managed certain .tiff files. With the 1.1.2 update that Apple is trying to get all iPod Touch users to install, this has been patched which makes it quite a pain to Jailbreak. Fortunately it can be done!

Here’s a step by step guide I’ve put together with the help of a few other guides I’ll mention later on:

This guide will assume you have your Touch updated to 1.1.2 already, as the first step requires downgrading to 1.1.1 to prepare it for the update.

NOTE: You CANNOT jailbreak it on 1.1.2 through jailbreakme.com. You MUST downgrade to 1.1.1 so get reading below!

1. Firstly we’re going to downgrade from 1.1.2 to 1.1.1. You’ll need to download the 1.1.1 firmware which can be downloaded from here (151mb). Download in Firefox as it needs to be downloaded with the file extension .ipsw. Once that’s finished downloading (if you’re downloading at 90 KB/sec it should take about 30 - 40 minutes), plug your iPod Touch into your computer.

How To Make Your Own Think Different Ad!

Think Different was an advertising slogan created for Apple Computer in 1997 by the Los Angeles office of advertising agency TBWA\Chiat\Day. It was used in a famous television commercial, several print advertisements, and several television advertisements for Apple products.

The Think Different ad’s great response can really be accredited to the music played during the ad (which we’ll talk about later on), and the black and white video used.

Now that you know the basics on the ad, let’s jump right in and talk about how you can make your own Think Different ad! think diff

You Need:
Music - http://itsallmac.com/files/Mac%…
Video Editor (Apple’s iMovie’s good enough for this)
Video Clips/Photos - Just really get some old photos/videos (youtube’s the good place to find videos), and make sure they have relevance to the text of the music.
YouTube Account - you’re gonna need somewhere to post the result! Make an account here.

What To Do:

1.. Find the videos/photos. As mentioned before, Google searches are an easy way to find photos of who you want in it (for example, Bono) and YouTube is the place for finding videos. Oh, and once you’ve found a video, you can download it by using an App called TubeSock.

2. Download the music from the original Think Different ad. Get it here.

3. Open up the Video Editor, and drag the movies/photos in, and the music in. Then put the cross dissolve/fade effect in between each clip. Make sure it’s a long fade, not a short one.

4. At the end of the video, make sure you put an Apple Logo or whatever other image you decide to use, and the ‘Think Different’ slogan on a black background. This gives it that extra Apple-effect.

5. Export into .mov, .mp4, .avi, etc. Anything that YouTube will accept (this way you can show it to the world!) will do.

6. Open up YouTube and login to your account (make one if you haven’t already). Then just simply UPLOAD YOUR VIDEO!

7. Post a link to your video here as a comment. I’d love to see your final result!

Creating Aqua Images (Photoshop)

This guide was written by Dizaztor:

There are three characteristics that set an ‘aqua’ image apart from a flat image:

  • Glare
  • Proper Lighting
  • Drop Shadow

1. Creating Glare
Create a new window with a transparent background.

Tip: Even though OS X icons have a maximum area of 128×128, its best to start large and reduce the image size later. A safe size to start at is 256×256 pixels.

File: New…
- Create a perfectly round circle using the Elliptical Markee Tool by holding down the SHIFT key and dragging across the window.

- Use the Paint Bucket Tool to fill the ellipse with a solid color. Use grey if you are just learning how to aquify. You can always adjust the color later.

How To Get Large Games/Apps Much Faster Than Limewire

picture-6.png

This article is by Blackjack:

Every day I run Limewire, and I see some poor fellow trying to download Halo, a 600mb program, with a download speed of 8kps. No one ever gets more than 4% done. Sure, I’d love to leave Limewire running 24/7, but my poor G5 needs a break every now and then. So I decided to write this little note on how I get my software and games.

The best way to get FAST downloads on extremely large apps is #MacFilez. #MacFilez is an IRC channel on EFNet.
If you aren’t familiar with IRC, the first step is to get an IRC client. I use Snak (www.snak.com). I don’t have much experience with other clients, but I assume they are similar.

Upgrading MacBook Pro Hard Drive

17-macbook-pro.jpgWe’re back, after a couple month break, redesigning the website again, and adding some new features! And to start all the Mac Loving again, here’s a fantastic guide to Upgrading MacBook Pro Hard Drives, so get reading!

This article is by Kupo:

Well, I just upgraded my MacBook pro’s hard drive and found out it is not for the faint at heart. The MacBook is so easy you’d think they’d make the Pro the same way. Well they don’t. I decided to write a step-by-step here for our members since I couldn’t find one anywhere out on the web.

Upgrading Info:
The hard drive must be a laptop sized 2.5″ SATA drive. As of the writing of this post, there is only one SATA standard for mobile computers so you’re safe if you’re sure it’s SATA.
My upgrade was a 160gb Hitachi drive.

KEYBOARD SHORTCUTS

This incredible article is by Dodgy:

That damn mouse can get very annoying, you have to actually use both hands to get full use of the Mac, and honestly, I’m too lazy to do that. I find it much easier just to sit back, get comfortable, and lets my keyboard do the talking.

These easy to use (not so easy to remember) Keyboard Shortcuts will make using your Mac a breeze, and give you more control.

So anyway, there’s a long list of them, so let’s get started!

Shortcuts for freeze

Force quit Application Cmd + Option + Escape
Force restart Cmd + Ctrl + Power key

Securing Your Mac! The Guide Every Mac User Should Have.

This article is courtesy of codez:

Mac OS X is vulnerable to the experienced hacker, but using the following steps, you can secure it enough so that only someone with physical access to the machine and about 20 minutes would be able to hack into it. lock.gif

• The first step to securing your Mac is to limit who has access to the system. Unfortunately, all admins on Mac OS X are equal; any admin can edit any user’s permissions and all admins have access to any system preference. So to fix that, it is best to only have one administrator account and set the rest to normal users. Above the admin accounts, there is also the root account which has access to all the files on the computer, and the power to edit the permissions of any file.

How to Port Windows Games to Mac OSX

picture-6.pngThis article is by Heymbit (DagoWATT):

Hey, I know what your thinking: But Heymbit! I was told by some guy that Macs can’t play games!!! Well, you were lied to. Macs play games better than windfroze computers in my opinion. Anyways, it is true that more titles are released for windfroze rather than Macs, however there is a way to play them on a Mac without having Windows installed at all. I did not create this guide, this awesome guy named DagoWATT did, I’m sharing it with you as…well…it should be shared to create more and more cider ports. I’m going to also put a link at the bottom of this page for a mediafire file that will contain all you need to start porting today, besides the actual windfroze game and windfroze OS of course, those nut inculded. If you have any questions, want help, or want to request a game be ported, feel free to email me. So, without further annoyance, here’s the tutorial to port windfroze games to OSX:

Fabulous Facts About Forums

This article is by Kaisersoze:

In this guide, you’ll learn how to:

  • LINK to a specific message.
  • Understanding Private Messaging Mailboxes in the forums.

phpbb_logo.jpg::How to LINK to a specific message in the forums::

If you’re reading this, you’re most likely wondering, “WHERE can I get the URL I need to create a link to a specific message?” Well, don’t smack your forehead too hard when you find out, because… It’s so EASY!

Steps

1) Go to any message that you want to create a link to. It has to be a message in a forum. For reasons I hope are obvious, you can’t link to Private Messages.

2) See its tiny document icon? Yes, that’s it — up in the upper left-hand corner, the little “dog-eared” rectangle just to the left of the word “Posted…”

3) Control-click on the tiny document icon, and select “Copy Link to Clipboard” from the contextual popup menu that appears.

What to do when Force Quit doesn’t work!

This article is by youthtech.com:

If you like this article, please click here to DIGG IT!

Every mac user knows that pressing Command-Option-Escape will allow you to Force Quit an application. This comes in handy when that stubborn program locks up, or refuses to quit by normal methods.
Sometimes, however, trying to Force Quit an application doesn’t quite work the way you’dpicture-13.png expect it to. If a normal Force Quit doesn’t work, try these steps:

1) Open the Terminal application. By default, this is in the Utilities folder, located in the Applications folder (and this application should
not be moved). You can also find it by searching “terminal” in Spotlight.

2) Type “top”. The top command displays various information about currently running applications, including CPU usage, memory info,
and some other stuff. If the COMMAND you’re looking for isn’t there, try stretching the window to make it longer.

Downloading From GOOGLE VIDEO

This article is by Moksha:

Ever wanted to have a copy of that hilarious video you found on Google Video? I know they let you download a file to watch with Google Player, but that’s still streaming it, and you can’t use that file for anything else. Read on.

With a bit of poking around, I discovered how you can get a link to download a .avi file of the movie you want.
For my example, I’m going to use Intermission in the Third Dimension by Donald Hertzfeld, because it’s really funny.

Step 1: Go to the regular Google Video site for your movie, in this case here.

Step 2: Click the Download for Windows/Mac button. It’ll start downloading Google Video Player, just stop that download, and then click on “Manually download the video”.

Step 3: A small (around 4 KB) file, in this case called IntermissionintheTHI.gvp will download, which is supposed to be something you open with Google Video Player, but we know better than that.
Step 4: Right- or Control-Click this file, choose Open with, and select other.

Step 5: It’ll give you a list of applications you can open the file with, go down and select TextEdit.

Alternatively, if you think you’re going to do this a lot, Get Info on the .gvp file, go to Open With, choose Other, and select TextEdit. Now click the Change All button, which will make TextEdit the default application to open up the .gvp files with, saving you those tedious steps.
